Winters are officially over and summer has already arrived. With summer comes a range of skin issues such as sunburn, dark skin, wrinkles, etc because of the exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. In fact, prolonged exposure to UV rays can even cause skin cancer but you need not worry at all as here are five simple tips for protecting your skin from the scorching heat this summer.

The warm and bright summer is a good change after a cold winter but as good as the sunlight may feel now, it can cause lots of damage to your skin if you don’t take protective measures. Besides the discomfort of scorching heat, the UV rays from the sun can cause lots of skin-related issues like sunburn, skin rashes, sticky and oily skin, etc. In the coming months, the rising temperature will make you want to sit at home comfortably all day while sipping lemonades but it’s not possible because of how much you try, there will be reasons you have to go outside and face the heat. Here we have five simple tips which are quite helpful for protecting your skin from the harmful effects of sunlight.

Apply Sunscreen

During the summers, while going outside, applying sunscreen on your face and body is the most important thing to protect your skin from the harmful effects of sunlight. There are various types of sunscreen available in the market but always buy a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays (two main types of ultraviolet (UV) rays, and has an SPF of at least 30, preferably 50. If you have to be outside for a long period then try to apply sunscreen every two hours for continuous protection if you are sweating.

Cover Your Skin

Yes, we know that it’s not always possible to wear long sleeves during summer but try to cover your skin as much as you can. If you are riding a scooty or bike then wrap a scarf around your face to protect it from direct exposure to sunlight. Wearing a hat is also a good way to protect your face and shade your eyes from sunlight. Also, get yourself a nice pair of sunglasses that block UV rays even if it costs a little bit more than those cheap roadside sunglasses as they will protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Along with protecting your skin from the outside, it’s important to take care of the internal part of the body also. It’s very important to keep yourself hydrated during the summers because dehydration can lead to sunstroke which can be serious sometimes. While sipping cold drinks is quite normal but water is best when it comes to keeping yourself hydrated. Try to avoid sugary drinks with added flavours and artificial colours because of the harmful chemicals they contain which are not good for your health. Along with water, simple lemon juice with a pinch of salt is another good option to keep yourself hydrated without having any side effects.

Try to Avoid Going Outside During This Particular Period

We know how much we try but there will always be a reason to go outside because of a job or some other reason. It’s impossible to be inside our houses every day but try to avoid going outside from 11 am to 2 pm as during this period the sunlight will be at its peak. If it’s not very important, try to stay inside your house or office during those few hours. If you have to go outside during this period because of some urgent work, try to be under shade as much as possible because UV rays are at their strongest during those few hours.

Maintaining a good lifestyle during the summer is quite important to keep yourself healthy and avert any kind of health problem. If you smoke or drink alcohol then cut down the amount or stop them altogether if possible. Use mild soaps and moisturisers. Eat lots of vegetables, and fruits along with plenty of water, and try to avoid heavy and oily food as it can affect your stomach adversely. Avoid hot showers as they can strip important oils from your skin. Follow a summer-friendly skincare schedule along with cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising your skin regularly to maintain healthy skin.
